Florida advances legislation to ban fluoride in public water — What’s next for Water Treatment? 💧

Updated: May 7

Florida is poised to become the second U.S. state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, following Utah’s lead. The bill, now awaiting Governor Ron DeSantis' signature, does not mention fluoride directly but restricts the use of any water additives that are not essential to meeting potable water standards. The initiative is backed by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long opposed community water fluoridation and recently eliminated the CDC's oral health division, which had supported fluoridation efforts.

This move has sparked significant backlash from dentists, public health experts, and local officials. They warn that removing fluoride—recognized for decades as a safe and cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay—could disproportionately harm children and underserved communities. While some recent studies suggest potential cognitive risks at elevated fluoride levels, the CDC reaffirmed in May 2024 that fluoridation at recommended levels poses no proven risk to health and remains one of the greatest public health achievements of the last century.

Some local governments in Florida had already voted to remove fluoride from their water systems, while others argue that the decision should remain at the community level.

Currently, about one-third of U.S. community water systems, serving over 60% of the population, fluoridate their water.

One such innovation is the use of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), which can effectively purify water by targeting a wide spectrum of organic and inorganic contaminants. These systems offer a chemical-free or additive-free approach that may reduce the need for traditional additives, making them especially relevant in today’s evolving regulatory and public health landscape.

Ecosign Technologies offers its proprietary AOP technology, the Multi-Oxidative System, which efficiently reduces organic and microbiological loads in both water and wastewater treatment.

Explore how the Multi-Oxidative System can help ensure safer and more sustainable water for all.
