🌍 World Environment Day: A Call to Reflect, Engage, and Act for a Sustainable Future

Today, on June 5th, Ecosign join the global community in celebrating World Environment Day, as established by the United Nations. This date is a powerful reminder of the urgent need for environmental awareness and collective action. It’s a moment to reflect, engage, and act — both individually and collectively — for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable planet.

One of the most pressing issues we face today is marine pollution. Every year, over 25 million tons of waste enter our oceans, and an alarming 80% of this waste originates from our cities, due to inefficient collection systems and improper disposal methods.

In Brazil, the numbers are equally concerning: 2 million tons of waste are dumped into the oceans annually — the equivalent of filling 7,000 soccer fields or 30 Maracanã stadiums from base to top.

Studies conducted by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and Abrelpe (Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste Companies) reveal the direct connection between marine pollution and the failures of urban solid waste management. According to these organizations, “the 80% of waste originating from cities is the result of inefficiencies in municipal waste services or the population’s careless disposal habits.”

This critical scenario calls for deep reflection and a renewed commitment from all sectors — governments, businesses, and civil society. We must invest in waste management infrastructure, promote environmental education, and foster a circular economy to reverse this devastating trend. Our future, and the health of our planet, depend on what we do today.
